Creating an Office

Recently, we pulled the sofas, tables, lamps, everything out of our front "sitting room" and started from scratch making it into an office.  Since we have, what I call, the gathering room to "live in", we never used the front room as it was.  Below is a before photo:

We sanded down this old table, used tung oil to finish it, no stain.  I love the patina of the three old poplar planks this table was originally made from close to a couple of hundred years ago.

We brought down a couple of used chairs we'd stored in the attic and had them recovered.

I bought this chair at an antique store years ago.  The fabric was worn off of it and you could see the horse hair stuffing in the seat.  I loved the worn wood of this chair so much I decided not to refinish it.  The upholsterer thought I was crazy.  (He may be right.)

We also reupholstered this Wingback.  We painted the walls SW Oyster Bay and the ceiling, SW Latte.

I found this old phone at an estate sale a few years back for $5, a steal!

The old inkwell here inspired my blog name.

Cigar Man and I went to the Nashville Flea Market today.  This is what we came home with.  Hope to do something special with this...but that's for another time.

  1. Nice room repurpose, Marsha! Love your desk. I always think it's a great idea to make a room what you will use it for. If we hadn't moved from our previous home, I had thoughts of turning our dining room it into a library/dining room. It was more of a pass through room and really only used on holidays.

  2. Love everything about that room. The paint colors you chose are so pretty. The wood on your new desk is amazing. I really like what you put in the lamp too.

  3. I love the room like this! Great idea to completely empty it out and then start with a fresh idea. Love the old chair and that you did not do anything to the wood, its perfect! The desk is wonderful and I love the colors in those planks as well. I am sure you will enjoy this new space very much!

  6. Wow I love it. I did this to one of the extra bedrooms and made it my office and I really love it. I like your desk a lot...and the chair is awesome...I wouldn't change the finish on it at all. I really like the wall color you chose- it's very soothing. The hardware your hubby found looks great- it will be fun to give it a new purpose!

  19. What a beautiful room! Love your paint colors. I'm about to paint my office (or have it done). I'm going with Benjamin Moore Copper Patina. Can't wait to have it done. I have plans for the space, and really want to get going on them. Love your blog. BTW, my husband has a first cousin in Franklin TN, Ann and Ron Griffin. Now following.
